This story is about Moranbah. It sits inland from the Queensland coastal city of Mackay Australia, described in 1864 as “an unenterprising little township” memorable only for its “debauchery and bad language.” Given some of the accounts of life in frontier towns, the description of Mackay was remarkable for its restraint. Today, Moranbah is an inkspot on a map, 22 degrees south of the Equator and 148 degrees east of the Greenwich meridian. And is first and foremost a mining town.
