From the AuthorThe fight for freedom and the recreation of military pastTwo major themes struck me when I was writing WAR IN BRITAIN. Firstly, that so much of warfare in Britain has been about the pursuit of freedom. Freedom to be an independent tribe or nation, freedom to be left alone by tyrants - it is a freedom that has cost so much that it cannot be given away lightly and, hopefully, this book reminds us of that sacrifice. Secondly, the recreation of our military past is so rich in the form of numerous re-enactment groups and that these people produce very useful research in the form of practical experimentation. I have quoted their discoveries throughout the book - from the sound of armour to the performance of medieval firearms - and their contribution to military history is shown in the many excellent photographs used throughout.
