Chronic pain is a common phenomenon affecting large numbers of the population. It encompasses a wide variety of conditions ranging from migraine and low back pain to metastatic malignant disease. The vast majority of patients presenting with chronic pain are cared for in general practice, but a significant number require referral to specialist services. The report gives an account of the definition, classification and management of chronic pain, describes existing arrangements in Scotland and makes recommendations for future developments.
