Much of the material so far published on community care for former long-stay patients in mental hospitals is anecdotal or polemical, and there has long been a need for sound academic research on the key question: Can patients have a better quality of life in the community? This careful and thorough study of the rehabilitation of a group of patients from the North Wales Hospital at Denbigh to small-scale domestic settings is a welcome addition to a relatively sparse literature.
