In his autobiography, Wheeler describes the efforts, the sacrifices, the pleasure, the friendships which the life of a leading rugby player offers in the 1980’s. As a young member of a London Old Boys Club there was little indication that here was someone who would become recognised as one of the world’s outstanding players. But after the 1977 Lions Tour, the leading New Zealand journalist, Terry McLean described him as “one of the best all-round hookers of modern times”
