The setting is the fishing village of Strathquinnan on the west coast of Scotland. The principle cast is the local lifeboat crew. The story is one of bigotry and compassion, of duplicity and heroism, as adultery and crime mingle with the raw, naked courage of the lifeboatmen, all set against a background of complex human relationships and religious tensions of the West Highlands in the 1950’s.
