A.L. Rowe, the distinguished historian, was born in 1903 in the village of Tregonissey in Cornwall. His father was a china clay worker and his mother kept a small shop to help out. But the Young Rowe was something of an outsider in the tight-knit , simple, and rather primitive community in which he grew up. This story of solitary struggle and endurance forms the background to his matchless description of Tregonissery, the village whose custom's and characteristics – which all the time the boy was observing- had remained traditional.
