Donaldson’s study concentrates on the weekly press, and in particular on the new wave of penny weeklies which catered mainly for the working class and which combined a wide-ranging news service with a miscellany of popular literature. They carried original writing – poetry, fiction, reminiscences, biographies, history, folklore and popular musicology – in enormous quantities, and little of it ever found its way into book form.
